Cleaning a Flatweave Rug.
Flatweave rugs are typically hand woven using wool yarn for the weave and wool or cotton for the warp foundations of the rug. They often have a multitude of colours that are woven into patterns across the rug. Flatweave rugs can come with conditions such as being heavily over dyed and bleeding. This is why it isn’t recommended to have your Flatweave Rug cleaned in your home by a carpet cleaning machine.
We have many years experience, the correct rug cleaning equipment and cleaning products to clean your Flatweave Rug safely and thoroughly. We are also Woolsafe approved members meaning you can be rest assured your Flatweave rug is in safe hands.

Cleaning of all types of Flatweave Rugs.
There is a huge range of different types of Flatweave rugs.
- Kilims
- Dhurries
- Soumaks
- Navajo
- Needlepoints
- Chainstitch
- Aubusson
- Savonnerie
- Woven Sisal/Jute
- Machine Loomed
They all share the same trait that they are completely flat and have no pile. They are thin, like material and can be folded to be moved around easily. They all have a unique way of being woven, however they often need specialists care and attention when it comes to cleaning a flatweave rug.
Kilims, Dhurries, Soumak and Navajo rugs all have warp foundations and then the yarn, usually wool or cotton is woven in patterns creating the flatweave pattern of the rug but they all have unqiue features that means you can tell them apart.
Needlepoint and Chainstitch rugs are made with a canvas material as the foundation and wool, cotton and silk yarns are all used and are stitched into the canvas creating the pattern.
Aubusson and Savonnerie rugs are woven using a traditional french tapestry style using wool and they have intricate floral designs.
Jute and Sisal rugs are made from natural plant leaves and fibres, they are biodegrable meaning they are an all round very eco friendly rug, however they are sensitive to water and can mark/stain easily. They are made by weaving the natural fibre usually on a cotton foundation.
Machine loomed rugs such as the ever popular Laura Ashley cotton rugs that you can longer buy are a rug we see very often, same with the designer Louis de Poortere rugs both are made on machine looms and are very tightly woven with cotton/brushed cotton/viscose.
